Ganiel Krishnan, ABS-CBN NewsMANILA — Veteran actress Boots Anson-Roa Rodrigo is using her nearly six decades in the entertainment industry to champion mental health awareness through the upcoming musical film “Unfiltered,” a project she considers more than just another acting opportunity.
For Anson-Roa Rodrigo, the film carries a deeply personal meaning, particularly as a grandmother and great-grandmother who recognizes the importance of addressing mental health concerns among younger generations.
“Para sa akin, and I’ve been in the industry for about 60 years, this is really an advocacy. While I love acting, there is an extra texture and nuance to my participation here,” she said.
“It’s because I’m part of a great advocacy and something that’s very close to my heart because I have grandchildren and great-grandchildren. So it’s so timely,” she added.
Directed by Hanz Florentino, “Unfiltered” is a musical drama that explores the emotional struggles and mental health challenges faced by young people.
Florentino said the film comes at a crucial time as conversations surrounding mental health continue to gain attention in the Philippines.
“We’re really excited, especially with all that’s happening with the mental health landscape in the Philippines with our youth. And it’s just timely that we were gifted by this story and by the talents that we have,” he said.
The production worked closely with mental health professionals to ensure that the film presents its themes responsibly and accurately, Florentino said. The screenplay was reviewed by psychiatric professionals, while psychologist Rian Portugues also provided guidance.
“There’s a line between creating a really good film and then there’s also that line we don’t want to cross. And we’re able to maintain that line,” Florentino explained.
He emphasized that “Unfiltered” does not aim to lecture audiences about mental health but instead offers a realistic portrayal of the experiences of its four central characters.
“We are not preaching anything. We’re just there. The film just really opens a lens on the journeys of our four characters and how they journey with mental health,” he said.
Meanwhile, Anson-Roa Rodrigo stressed that films like “Unfiltered” can serve as powerful platforms for encouraging open conversations between parents and their children.
“This really resonates with the times. And it’s a very important film,” she said.
The veteran actress also shared a personal connection to mental health advocacy, recalling her daughter’s involvement in legislation addressing mental health concerns during her term in Congress in 2018.
Anson-Roa Rodrigo also praised the film’s producers and creative team, including Ernie Lopez and Florentino, for their commitment to bringing the story to the big screen.
“How wonderful that we’re able to do it through film, through music, and a beautiful script,” she added.
Producer Ernie Lopez has his own experience with mental health challenges, revealing that he suffered a nervous breakdown when he was just 17 years old.
Through “Unfiltered”, Lopez hopes to remind young people experiencing similar struggles that recovery is possible.
“At gusto ko lang malaman ng iba, ng kabataan, there is hope,” he said.
Lopez also encouraged the public to become more attentive to the emotional well-being of others, emphasizing the importance of listening and recognizing when someone may be struggling.
“Sana maging mas masusi tayo sa pakikinig sa kapwa-tao natin at mas observant sa anong nangyayari sa buhay nila,” he said.
The producer also highlighted the participation of mental health advocacy organizations, including Anchored 1 Million, which aims to train one million mental health advocates by 2030, and Heal for Life, an organization focused on healing from childhood trauma.
Other members of the “Unfiltered” cast includes Kai Montinola, JP Cabrera, Dennah Bautista, Venice Bismonte, and Eujan Arda.
The film is expected to open in regular cinemas this November.
