Tennis: Eala, Sonmez booted out of Wuhan doubles first round after loss to wildcard pair

Star duo Alex Eala and Zeynep Sonmez made a quick exit in the Wuhan Open doubles, falling to wildcard pair Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska, 2-6, 3-6, on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian tandem came out firing, racing to a 4-0 lead before the Filipino-Turkish duo got on the board.

Eala and Sonmez broke Yastremska’s serve to make it 4-1, but the damage was done, as Kalinina and Yastremska closed out the first set, 6-2.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Ukrainian pair pulling ahead 5-2 before Eala and Sonmez could find a way back.

The “besties” continued to fall behind, succumbing in straight sets, 3-6.

After her first round Wuhan exit in both singles and doubles, Eala now shifts focus to her next tournament which is the Ningbo Open in China, running from October 19 to 25.
