Veteran Souquet remains determined to challenge younger pool players

MANILA — Despite decades of experience in professional pool, Ralf Souquet has no plans of slowing down, saying his desire to compete against and defeat younger players continues to drive him in the sport.

The German veteran expressed his determination to remain competitive as he prepares to compete in the Philippine Open following his stint as Captain of Team Rest of the World in the third reiteration of the Reyes Cup.

“Yes, absolutely. That’s why I’m still in the game, I want to play the youngsters, and actually want to beat them,” Souquet said in a post-match interview.

“It’s not getting easier, but I’m working on it.  I haven’t given up yet,” he added.

Souquet’s remarks came after leading Team ROW to its first Reyes Cup championship, adding another milestone to a career that already includes seven Mosconi titles.

The Reyes Cup victory also marked his first championship in the event, which is only in its third edition. Souquet said the achievement was particularly meaningful, as he became the first captain to lead a non-Asian team to the title.

Despite his responsibilities as captain, Souquet confirmed that he would also compete in the Philippine Open at Gateway Mall in Quezon City, where he expects to face a new challenge against a field of individual competitors.

However, the veteran admitted that his preparation for the tournament had taken a back seat while he focused on bringing together Team ROW for the Reyes Cup.

“I haven’t hit a ball in two weeks now,” Souquet said.

He added that he planned to use the following day to practice before the Philippine Open, hoping to regain his rhythm in time for competition.
