NBI arrests man for alleged online sexual abuse of minor
MANILA — The National Bureau of Investigation’s human trafficking division rescued a nine-year-old who was allegedly victimized by a 33-year-old man in an online sexual abuse and exploitation case in Bulacan.
According to the NBI, the investigation began after the child’s mother noticed that the victim had been communicating with someone every night.
Upon checking the child’s cellphone, she discovered that the child had sent sexually explicit images to the suspect.
NBI director Melvin Matibag said the suspect allegedly used a gadget to establish a relationship with the child and exploit the victim’s young age.
The NBI Human Trafficking Division found that the alleged grooming began through Facebook Messenger and continued for approximately six months.
During this period, the suspect allegedly gained the child’s trust and eventually persuaded the victim to send sexually explicit photos and videos.
Investigators also found messages indicating that the child was afraid whenever the suspect threatened to block them.
Rosalie Laguardia, chief of the NBI Human Trafficking Division, noted that the alleged grooming happened in around six months of communication.
The child was rescued during the implementation of a court-issued search warrant.
Authorities seized electronic gadgets, which are now undergoing forensic examination to gather additional evidence, establish the extent of the alleged offenses, and determine whether there may be other victims.
The suspect faces charges for alleged violations of the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children law.
The NBI reminded parents to remain vigilant about their children’s online activities.
“This is also a reminder to the parents. That we should take care of our children. We should know who they are talking to online,” Laguardia said.
