Constance Wu reveals she has already read the script for upcoming ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ series

Constance Wu expressed her excitement about returning to Crazy Rich Asians as the hit 2018 film is set to have a sequel in the form of an HBO Max series.

In an interview on TODAY, the actress shared her enthusiasm about revisiting the world of Crazy Rich Asians, noting that there are more stories to explore from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling book series.

“The first movie was based on the book by Kevin Kwan and he actually has a whole bunch of books like in this world, the Crazy Rich Asians world and so a lot follows that. I could tell you that we are all excited to be coming back. It’s filming here in New York where I live so I am thrilled about that and I think it’s really funny,” she remarked.

Constance also revealed that she has already read the script for the upcoming series.

“Yes I have [read the script]. It’s very funny and it’s very, I don’t know. I think it’s really good,” she said.

The actress also expressed confidence in Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film and will serve as the showrunner and executive producer of the series.

“We are in great hands because Adele (Lim) is show running and writing. She did the original and she’s just so smart, and good, and talented that I just feel great being with her sort at the helm,” she remarked.

According to an earlier report by Variety, original cast members Constance, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh are set to return for the upcoming series.

Adele expressed her excitement about revisiting the beloved characters and expanding their stories through an eight-episode series.

“It’s a ‘Crazy Rich’ family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” Adele remarked.

She also shared her enthusiasm about reuniting with the original creative team to bring the series to life.

“Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with,” she stated.

Meanwhile, director Jon M. Chu reflected on the film’s lasting impact on audiences and expressed his excitement about finally bringing the long-awaited sequel to the screen.

“It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what comes next. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back,” he said.

Production for the series is scheduled to begin in 2027.
