K-pop girl group ILLIT made its comeback on Monday with the extended play (EP) “Break Even,” led by a catchy single about confidently walking away from a one-sided romantic attraction.

The title refers to an “emotional breakeven point where you neither gain nor lose anything,” member Yunah explained through an interpreter during a press conference in Seoul that was livestreamed to international media.

“It’s about declaring, ‘We will no longer pour our time and energy in a relationship where our efforts aren’t reciprocated,'” she added.

The album’s message is best captured in its lead single, “You’re Under Arrest,” which delivers a warning to someone who led the song’s narrator to believe their relationship was more than it actually was.

“‘You’re Under Arrest’ is directed at someone who’s guilty of being too nice and giving us the wrong idea. It’s like telling that person that we’re taking matters into our own hands and putting an end to this frustrating relationship,” Wonhee said.

The lyrics also playfully “list all the evidence that gave us the wrong idea,” she said.

Musically, “You’re Under Arrest” is an electro-pop track featuring a recurring whistling sound, which has prompted fans online to draw comparisons to the Filipino electronic dance music genre budots.

The music video features the ILLIT members as secret agents on a mission to track down someone who stole their hearts and disappeared, with a guest appearance by actor Song Kang.

“It was great to work with Song Kang on our music video,” Yunah said.

“He told me that he enjoys our music and he has been watching our promotions, so he was so encouraging,” she recounted.

BIGGER STORY

“You’re Under Arrest,” however, is just one part of a bigger story that unfolds across the four-track project, making it best experienced in its intended sequence, as the track order was deliberately arranged.

The opening track, “Super In Love,” expresses the realization that ILLIT’s feelings were never reciprocated, Minju said.

The second track “More” is where “the embarrassment [felt from the realization in the first track] bubbles into frustration,” followed by “You’re Under Arrest” where the girls decide to walk away from the relationship.

In “Pop,” the closing track, “a new crush arrives and this shows that every past failure is simply a stepping stone towards a lucky beginning,” Minju said.

The group, which debuted in 2024, is not only conveying a more confident attitude through its music but has also grown more self-assured as performers.

“I think that the team and I, we have more confidence, so we are more laid-back. We recently did our first concert and I could feel that we were more confident communicating with our fans. We felt more at ease,” Wonhee said.

The group, which also includes Iroha and Moka, will promote “Break Even” as a four-member act, with Moka remaining on hiatus due to health concerns.

Iroha said Moka was still “in recovery” and expressed hope that she would soon reconnect with fans.

“[Moka] always cheers us up so we’re getting a lot of confidence thanks to her. While it’s only the four of us for the promotions, we’re going to have Moka in spirit in all of our performances,” Minju said.

Formed through the reality competition show “R U Next?,” ILLIT debuted with the hit single “Magnetic” and has since released a string of catchy tracks, including “Not Cute Anymore” and “It’s Me.”
