MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered an urgent review of its early warning and disciplinary systems following separate complaints of alleged abuse against police officers filed by two women in the past week.

PNP chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. directed concerned units to strengthen mechanisms for detecting and addressing warning signs of abuse within the police force, stressing that personnel accused of violence against women must be held accountable if found liable.

“We will not tolerate any form of violence against women, especially when the alleged perpetrator is a member of the police service sworn to protect the people,” Nartatez said in a statement.

The directive came after a teacher from Mindanao filed an administrative complaint before the National Police Commission (Napolcom) on October 27 against her live-in partner, a police corporal, accusing him of repeatedly abusing her for nearly nine years.

Last October 22, another woman lodged an administrative complaint against her live-in partner, a police staff sergeant, over alleged physical, emotional and mental abuse.

“We will ensure that the allegations are properly investigated and that any personnel found liable will face the appropriate sanctions under the law,” Nartatez said.

Nartatez also directed concerned PNP units to coordinate closely with Napolcom and provide the necessary support to the ongoing proceedings.

“Discipline must begin within our own ranks and preventing abuse requires more than policies on paper. We must strengthen early reporting, intervention, and accountability mechanisms to ensure that warning signs are addressed before they lead to further harm,” he said.
