MANILA — Commuters in parts of Metro Manila can take advantage of free jeepney rides starting November 5 as government agencies launch a transport initiative tied to the Philippines’ hosting of the 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Meetings.

The program, a joint effort of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr), will deploy 30 modern jeepneys on two key routes for 10 days, offering passengers free rides while promoting Philippine tourism to the public.

DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Mark Steven Pastor said the initiative reflects a whole-of-government approach as the country prepares to host regional leaders and delegates.

“This is a reflection of our commitment that we are collaborating with different agencies, in particular the DOT, for spearheading this initiative. Kami po sa Kagawaran ay buong-buo ang suporta sa ating DOT dahil we are not just showcasing our country. We are showcasing our culture, and our tourism,” Pastor said on behalf of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.

Starting November 5 until November 14, commuters may avail themselves of free rides on the SM Fairview-Buendia route and the Sucat-Baclaran route.

The vehicles will operate daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will feature images of Philippine tourist destinations, festivals, and cultural attractions.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said the initiative aims to ensure that Filipinos experience tangible benefits from the country’s ASEAN chairmanship.

“Ang utos po ng ating Pangulo, ay ang chairship po ng Pilipinas hindi lamang dapat nakikita o napapanood sa mga balita. Dapat maramdaman ng bawat Pilipino ang konkretong benepisyong hatid nito. That is why we continue working closely with our partner government agencies to develop initiatives that showcase the best of the Philippines while creating meaningful experiences for our visitors, delegates, and stakeholders,” Angara-Mathay said.

Based on Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board data, the free ride program is expected to serve an average of 12,500 passengers daily. Government officials also said the initiative would help support drivers and transport workers by ensuring their income during its implementation.
