Remulla to file complaints at DICT, Facebook over fake news

MANILA — Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla will file complaints with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the social media site Facebook to stop the proliferation of fake news.

In a briefing on Friday, Remulla showed screenshots of the false information about his health that is posted online, including a supposed leukemia diagnosis.

“It’s meant to influence people, so that they will have a doubt on our government and this office,” he said.

Remulla also shared that he was alarmed after his friends sent him messages, saying they were praying for him.

“It’s been almost three years since I’ve been cancer-free. Gusto pa rin nilang ipakalat at bigyan ng kahinaan ang aming opisina,” he said.

Aside from his health, Remulla said there are also accounts that spread propaganda about the ongoing cases before the Sandiganbayan, specifically the plunder charge against former House Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.

“They’re trying to deceive people by having all of these social media articles that actually do not reflect the truth or the full truth,” he said. “It’s really a careless use of a very powerful medium.”
