Key suspect in death of Bohol mayor killed in encounter with police

THE primary suspect behind the death of a mayor in Bohol was killed in an encounter in the province on Wednesday, police said.

Emigdio Aparece was killed in a firefight with members of the Bohol Provincial Mobile Force Company and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) in Barangay Conception, said Senior Supt. Angeles Geñorga, provincial director.

Aparece was the main suspect in the death of Buenavista mayor Ronald Lowell Tirol who was gunned down inside a cockpit arena on May 27.

Aparece, who has multiple warrants of arrest, was also one of Bohol’s most wanted persons and the leader of Aparece Criminal Gang.

Geñorga said operatives tried to persuade Aparece to surrender but the suspect fired at them, instead, prompting a retaliation that resulted in his death.

Recovered were one pistol with magazines and ammo from the incident.

Tirol was the second Bohol mayor killed in almost a year after Gisela Bendong Boniel in June 2017 when her husband and provincial board member Rey Boniel allegedly threw her body into the water in June 2017. She has not been found to this day. ROY NARRA
