Robredo calls for BBL passage in recognition of ‘selfless Muslims’

VICE PRESIDENT Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo renewed her call for the passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) at the end of Ramadan, saying that its passage is a fitting recognition to the Muslims’ selflessness.

“We hope that the Bangsamoro Basic Law will soon be passed in a form that adequately reflects the hopes and dreams of our dear Bangsamoro brothers and sisters, to end their long-drawn suffering and fulfill their desire for lasting peace,” Robredo said in a statement for the Eid’l Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, considered the holiest month in Islamic culture, according to research.

It is when “Muslims fast. abstain from pleasures and pray to become closer to God. It is also a time for families to gather and celebrate.”

The proposed BBL abolishes the existing Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and replaces it with Bangsamoro Region, which will be governed by a duly elected Parliament.

“The value of sacrifice for the good of others is one of the foundations of Islam. For one whole month, Muslims all over the world abstain from worldly pleasures and, instead, feed and clothe the poor. In the process, they renew their faith and show their commitment to service in the name of Allah. In the past year, we have seen first-hand, how our Muslim brothers and sisters were willing to sacrifice their own well being to help people in need,” Robredo said.

“Many of our Muslim countrymen were willing to give food to those who had none to eat, to give shelter to those who had lost their homes, and to give comfort to those who were in despair in the midst of the crisis in Marawi,” Robredo added.

Robredo was referring to the Marawi siege in which terrorist Maute group took over the city from May to October 2017, leaving over 100 people dead and destroying property and livelihood estimated at P53 billion.

“May this day reward you for your sacrifices and selflessness to those in need. May this day strengthen your faith in Islam and give you the strength to overcome the challenges that you and the nation face,” Robredo said. LLANESCA T. PANTI
