2 dead, 13 hurt in Quezon road mishap
LUCENA CITY – Two motorists died and 13 others were hurt in a three-vehicle smash-up in Atimonan town in Quezon province early Sunday, police report said.
Chief Insp. Michael Encio, Atimonan police chief, said a Bicol-bound truck driven by one Elmer Gomez lost its brakes while negotiating a descending section of the diversion road in Barangay (village) Santa Catalina around 2:40 a.m.
The truck consequently bumped a Mitsubishi L300 van driven by Ronnie Panteriore. Due to the impact, the van slammed into an Isuzu drop side truck driven by Randy Asiao.
Two of the van passengers – Shielo Corbito, 14, and Evelyn Asiao, 57 – died on the spot, report said.
Van driver Panteriore and his passengers, Elisio, Irene, Justine, Analyn and Alvin, all surnamed Asiao, and Medina Castillo, Arlene Corbito, James Angelo Bernal, and Brixter Rita all sustained injuries.
“They were all family members on their way to Bicol,” Encio said in a phone interview. He clarified that the truck driver Randy, although also surnamed Asiao, was not related to the other victims.
Truck driver Gomez and his two passengers Michael Rosales and Guillermo Chavez, also suffered injuries.
The injured were taken to Doña Martha Memorial District Hospital in Atimonan town center for treatment. /cbb
