Comelec may defer filing of COCs

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) may defer the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) for the May 2019 mid-term elections in deference to the call of Congress to postpone it by a week because of ongoing deliberations on the proposed 2019 national budget and other priority measures.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez on Tuesday said the Commission is studying the matter as contained in House Concurrent Resolution 20 and Senate Concurrent Resolution 13.

Both resolutions urged the poll body to move the filing of COCs from Oct. 1 to 5, 2018 to Oct. 11 to 17, 2018.

Jimenez pointed out that if the proposal of congress is approved by the Comelec en banc, the poll body’s timetable, particularly the printing of ballots, would be affected.

He said that aside from ongoing preparations for the May 2019 elections, the Comelec is also preparing for the plebiscite for the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law scheduled on January 21, 2019. WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
