MEMBERS of the Gabriela Women’s Party and supporters of Ronald “Bato” de la Rosa faced off on Friday as the Bureau of Corrections chief filed his certificate of candidacy (CoC) for senator at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Manila.

It started when a Gabriela Women’s Party member heckled de la Rosa when he arrived at the Comelec main office, saying “ang mga tumatakbo puro trapo,” among others.

(Those who are running are all trapo.)

One of de la Rosa’s supporters shouted to the heckler “magtrabaho ka!” (You work!).

Gabriela members gathered outside the Comelec to protest against the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (Train Law), contractualization, among others.

“Trapo” is loosely defined as a traditional politician who is known to make false promises, buys votes to perpetuate him/herself in power.

Gabriela has long been critical of President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug war, which has allegedly resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings (EJKs).

Duterte appointed de la Rosa chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to carry out his marching orders to end the proliferation of illegal drugs within three to six months after assuming the presidency in 2016.

De la Rosa was Davao City police chief from January 2012 to October 2013.
