Palami names Eriksson as new Azkals coach

Swedish football legend and former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson was named the new head coach of the Philippine Azkals, team manager Dan Palami announced on Saturday.

“In order for us to get even better, we are pleased to announce our coaching staff will be augmented by one of the legendary coaches of all time — Sven Goran Eriksson. He will be coaching for the Suzuki Cup and the Asian Cup,” said Palami during the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 Trophy Tour at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Eriksson led the English football team to a quarterfinal finish in the 2006 World Cup. He also served as mentor to Mexico and Ivory Coast national teams.

The 70-year old football tactician has under his belt 18 trophies in club-level tourneys in different countries including Italy, Sweden and Portugal. He was the first manager to win doubles in three various countries.Eriksson will work with Irish coach Scott Cooper in coaching the Azkals in the AFF Suzuki Cup next month and the AFC Asian Cup in January next year.

Eriksson is due to arrive in the country November 3.
