SMB battles Meralco as Governors’ Cup resumes

San Miguel Beer wants to go deeper into the playoff round when it faces Meralco tonight, as the games resume in Season 43 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Assured of a slot in the eight-team quarterfinals, the No. 6 Beermen (6-4 win-loss record) are eyeing to stretch their winning streak to five when they battle the Bolts at 7 p.m.

SMB though is already out of the race for the twice-to-beat privileges.

Meanwhile, Meralco, at the ninth spot with 4-6 win-loss record, is bent on upsetting San Miguel Beer to force a playoff for the eighth quarterfinal slot with sister team TNT KaTropa.

“It is a big challenge going up against the Beermen. To beat them you must bring your A game. It is a knockout game for us so we will go and give our all,” said Meralco coach Norman Black via text message.

In the 4:30 p.m. first game, Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX), holding a 5-5 win-loss record, meets the already-eliminated Rain or Shine (2-8).

“Whether we win or lose, we are already assured of a slot in the quarterfinals. We will still prepare as hard as we can against Rain or Shine. They will play without any pressure, and that makes them so dangerous,” said NLEX coach Yeng Guiao.
