Archers tame Tigers anew

De La Salle University displayed its dominance anew over University of Santo Tomas (UST), now under former Green Archers coach Aldin Ayo, 110-69, in Season 81 University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.

La Salle was enjoying a hefty lead, 50-31, by halftime, which ballooned to 73-34 came the latter part of the third period.

“I really liked the way we started it, the energy was really there at halftime. But there are two sides of energy, the positive and the negative, so I told them to be on the positive side. We must be smart and positive enough,” said La Salle coach Louie Gonzalez.

Six Archers scored in double figures, namely Aljun Melecio (22 points), Mark Dyke (16), Andrei Caracut (15), Jose Go (14), Justine Baltazar (13) and Florencio Serrano (13).

La Salle also outclassed UST in three-point shooting (15-7) and assists (21-10). The Tigers committed 23 turnovers that gave the Green Archers 28 points.

“It’s a good day,” said Melecio, who also shot 6-of-10 from the three-point zone in addition to his five rebounds and six assists.

The Green Archers improved their win-loss record to 7-4 for solo third.

Gonzalez, Ayo’s former deputy during his La Salle days, thanked his players for their effort.

“It is a sacrifice. We are training even on a holiday so I challenged the players to be consistent the entire game. There were things that we’re doing well but we won’t stop there. We must keep improving,” added Gonzalez.

UST’s Tobi Agustin was thrown out with only a few seconds remaining in the game due to a disqualifying foul.

Marvin Lee led UST with 26 points but failed to save the day for the Tigers whose win-loss record fell to 5-6.

La Salle beat UST 99-72 in the first round on October 3.
