P8-M worth of smuggled rice intercepted off Basilan town

SOME P8 million worth of smuggled rice were intercepted off the coast of Maluso, Basilan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Tuesday.

Joint elements of the PCG and the military intercepted a motor launch, the R/J Express, that was carrying the illegal shipment, said Lt. Cmdr. Arman Balilo, Coast Guard spokesman.

The operatives were on board the BRP Cape San Agustin, which seized the illegal goods while conducting maritime security in the vicinity.

Upon inspection the vessel yielded more or less 4,000 sacks of rice without the corresponding documents.

The hot goods were turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
