La Union to be tagged election hotspot – Albayalde

LA UNION will be included in the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) list of election hotspots, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Oscar Albayalde said on Thursday, a day after a vice mayor and his aide were ambushed and killed.

“For obvious reasons, we’re going to include La Union in our hotspots. We just don’t know if the Comelec (Commission on Elections) will decide on [whether] to have a control in the elections there,” he told reporters in a gun exhibit show.

In a separate interview, Albayalde said the PNP was still in the process of collating areas that may be tagged as election hotspots.

A province can be included in the list if there is a history of election-related violent incidents or a heated rivalry between politicians.

He previously listed Abra, Masbate, Lanao, and Zamboanga provinces as “perennial” election hotspots and would most likely be included again in the upcoming 2019 midterm elections.

Authorities are still investigating the death of Balaoan vice mayor Alfred Concepcion and his security aide Mike Ulep in an ambush incident on Wednesday morning.
