7 mindsets of a successful immigrant entrepreneur

Coming to a new country and starting a new life is not easy. Choosing the path of entrepreneurship does not make it any easier. It can be challenging. I still remember, like yesterday, the time I started my own business. It was difficult and I struggled for years. I didn’t know what to do, I was always looking for answers. I was trying out different things, but I had no idea what I had to do, to be successful.

But, slowly, over the course of time, I met the right mentors and the right people who shared insightful tips and ideas with me that helped me to adopt the right mindsets. Those mindsets eventually turned my struggles into a life that I could only dream of. I began to realize that all successful immigrant entrepreneurs have these mindsets. These seven ways of thinking differentiated them from every other immigrant.

Here I share these seven powerful mindsets with you:

  1. Continuous improvement

When you move to a different country, you are essentially starting from scratch. You have to go out every day, meet new people, learn new things. You need to adopt the mindset of learning and improving every single day. Those immigrant entrepreneurs who are able to acquire this mindset are exponentially more effective than everybody else.

  1. Value addition

This applies to every single interaction that you engage in. If you are meeting somebody new, you want to add value to them first before expecting something in return. In the same way, if you are starting a new business, you want to add value to the market first before you expect something in return.

  1. Problem solving

As an entrepreneur, you are a problem solver. This is more of a generic business mindset and doesn’t apply specifically to immigrants but needs to be stated. You want to solve an unsolved problem in the market. What are people struggling with? What is it that people need help with? People are always willing to pay for something that they have a problem with. And that is what a successful entrepreneur is able to do — find a solution or offer a better solution to that problem.

  1. Resourcefulness

Successful immigrant entrepreneurs are able to find innovative solutions to traditional problems. Most immigrant entrepreneurs face the challenge of limited financial resources and have to find ways to overcome that challenge. You have to be resourceful and think outside the box.

  1. Adversity as an advantage

This is something I’ve noticed over and over again. Successful immigrant entrepreneurs don’t see their adversity as a challenge. They see it as an advantage. It is something that gives them strength, power and resilience. It gives them the fuel to go out and take their life to the next level.

  1. Building meaningful relationships

This is another game changer. Successful immigrant entrepreneurs are able to build meaningful relationships, not by consciously thinking about it but by making this a part of their personality.

  1. Unshakeable self-belief

Successful immigrant entrepreneurs believe in their ability to make it. You want to take the time to build your self-belief, to dream, to set big goals and to develop confidence in your abilities. Because your self-belief is what powers you to the top of your potential.

I believe by focused and conscious practice, any immigrant can adopt these seven mindsets and build a successful business in Canada.
