An officer and a personnel of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) were arrested by operatives of the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) for allegedly extorting P2 million.

Authorities arrested BIR revenue district officer Bethshiba Bautista and examiner Rachel Villanueva in an operation conducted in the BIR building in Intramuros, Manila on Friday.

The CIDG reported that Bautista and Villanueva first planned to give P500,000 of the P2 million to the government and share the remaining P1.5 million.

The two denied the accusations. They are currently under the custody of the CIDG and will face direct bribery charges.

Greco Belgica, commissioner of the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, said officials have been conducting a series of operations in the BIR but this was the first time that they arrested a revenue district officer. ROY D.R. NARRA
