The third extension of martial law in Mindanao assures its residents of another full year of peace and security, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said.

The PNP hails the Congressional approval of the martial law extension in the region, which will be implemented until December 31, 2019.

The martial law in Mindanao, which has been extended twice, was supposed to end on December 31, 2018.

“This is a good day for the people of Mindanao to be assured of another full year of peace and security against [the] imminent threat of violence from extremist and communist terrorist forces,” he said in a statement.

Albayalde said police operations against the New People’s Army, Abu Sayyaf, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and other radical extremist groups “will continue without let-up” in support of the military and local government units.

He assured that the PNP will conduct its operations with respect for human rights and the rule of law.

“Rest assured, all PNP operations will be conducted under strict observance of police operations procedures and with due regard and respect for human rights and the rule of law,” he said.

Before the approval of the Congress, Albayalde has repeatedly said the PNP supports another extension of martial law in the region, saying it can help ensure peace in the 2019 elections and in the January plebiscite for the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law. /ee
