Coast Guard allows ships to sail after ‘Usman’ weakens

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has lifted the suspension on all sea travel after the Tropical Depression “Usman” weakened to a low pressure area and the weather bureau removed all cyclone warning signals in the country on Saturday morning.
The PCG made the move after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) lifted all tropical cyclone warning signals due to Usman.
“In view of the lifting of the Pagasa of all tropical cyclone warning signals as of 7am today, the PCG likewise is lifting the suspension of all sea travel in areas where trips have been suspended,” the PCG said in a statement.

The PCG suspended sea trips last Thursday in the following areas:
Luzon
- Sorsogon
- Masbate, including Ticao Island
Visayas
- Northern Samar
- Samar
- Biliran
- Leyte
- Southern Leyte
- Northern Cebu, including the Camotes Islands
Mindanao
- Dinagat Island
The agency also suspended all sea travel to and from Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.

Pagasa said Usman weakened into a low pressure area (LPA) on Saturday morning.
It made landfall over Borongan City, Eastern Samar, at 6 a.m.
However, Pagasa maintained that sea travel would risky over the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, the eastern and western seaboard of Southern Luzon, and the eastern seaboard of the Visayas due to the surge of the northeast monsoon.
The weather bureau advised fisherfolk and those with small seacraft not to venture out over the seaboards of said areas. /cbb
