THE military will have to “double” its defense against terrorism, its chief, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr., said on Wednesday.

“We advise our troops to double their efforts to prevent these violent incidents from happening so that we can encourage foreign investments and tourism in Mindanao,” Madrigal told reporters in a text message, in response to a travel advisory by the United Kingdom to its citizens against visiting Mindanao, citing the most recent bombing at a mall in Cotabato City, which claimed the lives of two people and injured several others.

Madrigal said that it was the prerogative of London to warn its citizens but assured the general public that the military and police were “doing everything” to prevent criminal activities, especially in Mindanao.

The United Kingdom, through its, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, released the advisory shortly after the United States Transport Security Administration cited the Ninoy Aquino International Airport for its poor aviation security. DEMPSEY REYES
