THE problem of insurgency in the country may be solved in three years, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Tuesday.

Lorenzana’s deadline contradicts the one-year, which Armed Forces Chief Benjamin Madrigal Jr. set.

“We cannot do it this year because this is such a big problem,” Lorenzana told reporters in a news conference at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, after the traditional New Year’s call.

He said the communist insurgency has been going on for 50 years and may use up the term of President Rodrigo Duterte, which is only until 2022.

“With the way we are doing now with our localized peace talks and the E-CLIP (Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program) and most are already surrendering, we can do it in three years,” said Lorenzana.

Lorenzana and the military wanted an end to insurgency in the Philippines by the middle of 2019, but which Jose Maria “Joma” Sison, founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), downplayed. DEMPSEY REYES
