5.9-magnitude quake off Davao Oriental rocks Davao City

MANILA, Philippines — Davao Oriental was hit by a 5.9 earthquake on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

In its initial bulletin, Philvolcs said the earthquake was located 127 kilometers (km) southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, at 4:03 a.m.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 114 kilometers.

It was felt at Intensity IV in Davao City and San Josefa, Agusan del Sur.

Instrumental intensities showed Intensity III in Alabel, Sarangani; Intensity II in General Santos City, Kiamba, Sarangani, Kidapawan City, Gingoog City, and Tupi, South Cotabato; and Intensity I in Cebu City, and T’boli, South Cotabato.

Philvolcs said this was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on Dec. 29. /cbb
