THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) warned Filipino workers against illegal recruitment and fly-by-night Nihongo language schools following approval by the Japanese parliament of an immigration law that would ease the entry of foreign workers into Japan’s labor force.

Administrator Bernardo Olalia of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) on Sunday advised prospective job applicants to wait for the appropriate guidelines in the recruitment and deployment of Filipino workers under Japan’s two new residency visa status.

Olalia identified them as the designated skills 1 and 2 visa status  (DS1 and DS2), which have yet to be implemented in April 2019.

Diet, the legislative branch of the Japanese government, approved the opening of the two visa categories on December 7, 2018. The two designated visas are meant to attract lower-skilled workers in industries where there are severe labor shortages.

The implementation of the DSI and DS2 visas is expected to open up the door to some 350,000 to 500,000 foreign workers up to 2025.  WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
