THE motive behind the grenade-throwing incident at the house of a judge, not a lawyer, as posted, in Cotabato City late Sunday night was “something personal” and had nothing to do with the plebiscite on the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Oscar Albayalde said on Monday.

Albayalde said that if it was meant to be related to the plebiscite, the attackers would have thrown the grenades outside the residence of Judge Angelito Rasalan to scare other people.

Based on the police report, the incident happened at about 9:10 p.m. just as the family was preparing to sleep.

Witnesses told police that two unidentified male assailants threw the grenades.

Albayalde, however, is not closing the possibility that terrorist groups may be behind the attack.

“We can say that this is not caused by a terrorist group just because they used a grenade or probably an improvised explosive device but we cannot discount the possibility that a member of a terrorist group has done this,” he said.

A post-blast investigation is ongoing.

The PNP deployed 6,698 police personnel for security and assistance to more than 2.2 million registered voters who will go to the polling centers to vote for or against the BOL.

Albayalde sent Deputy Director General Archie Gamboa, deputy chief for operations, to oversee and manage the implementation of the PNP security plan. ROY NARRA
