THE Philippine National Police (PNP) confiscated a total of 1,025 firearms from 96 private security agencies that were ordered to cease operations in 2018, Director General Oscar Albayalde said on Monday.

Albayalde said the confiscation of these firearms was part of the campaign of the PNP against loose firearms as contained in the eight-point side plan of the Supervisory Office for Security and Investigative Agencies (SOSIA).

Chief Supt. Reynaldo Biay, Civil Security Group director, said this was also the PNP’s way of preventing violence “because they can be utilized as protective agents or protectors during the elections,” he said.

Chief Supt. Noli Romana, Sosia director, said the licenses of these 96 private security agencies were revoked after they failed to renew their license to operate.

He said these firms would undergo investigation first “to give them due process” or “why they failed to surrender [their firearms] on time” before being charged administratively.

“Since we are giving them ample time, most of them [will be banned] or have their license to practice their security profession terminated,” Romana said.

He also said these private security agencies could not be re-established under a different name because of the PNP’s extensive background research and validation of applicants.

Albayalde said the PNP was expecting to account for more firearms from 356 other private security agencies that were ordered to cease operations. ROY NARRA
