BAGUIO CITY — The temperature in this mountain city sharply dropped to 9.8 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m. on Monday, the coldest morning that greeted residents and tourists this year.

It was colder than the lowest temperature recorded here on Tuesday last week, which was 10.4°C. At nearby Mt. Sto. Tomas, Benguet province, the temperature was colder at 7.2°C, said Wilson Lucando, weather observer at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration(Pagasa) station here.

He said the drop was caused by cold winds brought by the prevailing northeast monsoon or “hanging amihan” in Northern Luzon.

Last year, this city recorded its coldest temperature at 11.2°C on March 11.
