TAGUM, Davao del Norte — Grace Signacion received a fitting post-birthday gift on Monday after winning the gold medal in archery at the 2019 Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg at the DavNor Sports & Tourism Complex here.

Signacion, who turned 10 years old on Sunday, ruled the yeoman girls 20-meter event (72 arrows) for South Cotabato with a two-round total of 647 points.

“I’m happy that I won,” said Signacion in Filipino, who only started playing the sport upon the prodding of her cousin last year.

A Grade 4 student of Central Elementary School in the municipality of Surallah, Signacion fired 328 points in the first 36 arrows and followed it up with 319 points in the remaining 36 arrows.

A silver medalist in the single FITA event of last year’s National Finals in Baguio, Signacion aims for multiple medals when she competes in the mixed team and Olympic round events.

Koranadal’s Samantha Isabel Loreno came in second with 605 points while Signacion’s teammate Khrizleyn Hope Ferrer settled for bronze with 546 points.

Rhynjyll Yvis Endaya, Signacion’s schoolmate at Surallah, made it two golds for South Cotabato after dominating the bowman girls 30m (72 arrows) with 634 points, edging teammate Geanne Gasendo (601) and Davao’s Althea Kelly Odiong (593).

“I’m thankful for this win,” said the 12-year-old Endaya.

Koronadal also collected two golds after Romee Jonathan Rioja prevailed in the yeoman boys 20m (72 arrows) and Justin Matthew Basadre winning the bowman boys 30m (72 arrows).

Rioja scored 551 points to beat South Cotabato’s Karl David Mejillano (497) and teammate Paul Yrwan Bader (404).

Basadre, for his part, tallied 304 and 320 scores for a 624 two-round total to best South Cotabato’s Quin Myer Loreno (614) and Mark Jubert Lapiad (611).
