MANILA, Philippines — Binondo, the world’s oldest Chinatown, was in a festive mood as people of all ages gathered in the streets to welcome the Year of the Earth Pig on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

The Chinatown district in Manila was painted red with lanterns dotting the streets.

Most of the revelers also wore red clothing as the color was believed by Chinese tradition to drive away unwanted spirits and attract good luck.

Dragon and Lion dances added excitement to the festivities accompanied by drumbeats surrounding the alleys of Binondo.

Some Filipinos, whether with Chinese ancestry or not, started the Lunar New Year by praying for their personal intentions through lighting incense sticks.

And what is a Chinese New Year celebration without the much-loved tikoy? Long lines snaked around stalls of this delicacy made from sticky rice.

Visitors also happily took photos and videos despite the afternoon heat to join the other festivities in welcoming the Year of the Earth Pig. /je
