MANILA, Philippines — The behavior of the Chinese woman who threw taho at a police officer is not only an insult towards authorities but also towards the Philippines and Filipinos.

Vice President Leni Robredo said this following an incident involving a Chinese fashion design student who threw taho, a soybean curd drink, at a police officer detailed at the Boni Station of the MRT-3 when she was barred from entering the train because she was carrying food.

“Hindi lang pambabastos sa pulis, pero pambabastos ito sa bansa natin,” she said in her weekly radio show on Sunday.

Robredo noted the hospitality Filipinos show towards the Chinese, adding that foreigners should in turn respect the Philippines and its citizens.

She, meanwhile, said that the “special treatment” given to Chinese nationals, including jobs being given to them instead of Filipinos, may have given way to the disrespect shown by some of the Chinese nationals in the country.

“[W]ake-up call iyon sa ating lahat. Ano ba talaga? Maraming reklamo na iyong mga trabahong dapat sana sa Pilipino, nabibigay pa sa Instik. Tapos ito pa, parang kinakalinga natin sila tapos binabastos nila tayo,” she said.

The Chinese woman is now facing complaints of direct assault, disobedience to a person in authority, and unjust vexation over the incident.

Earlier, National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Guillermo Eleazar said he will recommend that the Chinese national be tagged as an “undesirable alien.”
