DAVE Peñalosa and returning Johnriel Casimero proved themselves to be real knockout artists on Saturday night when they crushed their respective foes in a boxing fight card organized by GerryPens Promotion at the SM North Edsa Skydome, Quezon City.

Peñalosa sent Mexican Marcos Cardenas thrice to the canvas en route to a fourth round technical knockout (TKO) win, claiming the World Boxing Organization (WBO) oriental featherweight title with an unbeaten record in 15 fights highlighted by 11 knockouts.

“My opponent trained and fought so hard too because just like me he wanted to be a champion. I just patiently wait for the right timing so I focus on defense,” the 28-year-old son of two-time world champion Dodie Boy Peñalosa told The Manila Times in Filipino.

Cardenas gave Peñalosa a good fight in the early rounds as he exchanged punches, but the Filipino boxer stunned the Mexican with a straight left for the first knockdown. A hurt Cardenas then protected his head as Peñalosa targeted the body that resulted in a second knockdown, prompting Referee Danrex Tapdasan to end the bout with 2:47 left in the fourth round.

“I’m so thankful to God and to my family for motivating me in this fight,” added Peñalosa, who is hoping to land a future world title fight against Mexican Oscar Valdez, the WBO featherweight titleholder.

Cardenas fell to 19-7-1 win-loss-draw record with 15 knockouts.

Meanwhile, Casimero scored a brutal sixth round technical knockout (TKO) victory over a brave Japanese opponent Kenya Yamashita in a non-title bantamweight bout.

Casimero (26-4 record with 17 knockouts) hit a strong right uppercut late in the fifth round that hurt the Japanese. Yamashita, however, did not surrender and continued to fight.

But another big right uppercut from the former two-division world champion in the sixth round ended all remaining hopes for the Japanese as the fight was stopped. Yamashita dropped to 13-5 record with 10 knockouts.

“He got my full respect,” said the 30-year-old Ormoc City of Yamashita, who was attended by medical personnel for few minutes before he fully recovered. The Japanese received a good standing ovation from the Filipino crowd.

In another bout, Carlo Caesar Peñalosa (14-1 record with seven knockouts) hit a solid right hook to the abdomen of Watana Phenbaan (18-6 record with 11 knockouts) to secure the win via third round TKO with 2:22 left of their non-title flyweight bout.

Ifugao’s Carl James Martin, 19, kept his unbeaten record in 12 fights by 11 knockouts after beating Petchcharhae Kokietgym of Thailand via stoppage.

The Thai refused to fight heading into the fourth round.
