PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Oscar Albayalde will no longer carry the rank of director general starting today, Friday.

Under a new law that modifies the rank classification of police officers by adapting the military system, Albayalde will now be called police general.

Police Maj. Gen. Lyndon Cubos, director for Personnel and Records Management, officially signed the memorandum dated February 26 but was released to the media on Friday, March 1.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act 11200, which standardized the ranks of PNP officers.

Listed below is the new rank classification for the PNP:

-Director General to Police General

-Deputy Director General to Police Lieutenant General

-Police Director to Police Major General

-Chief Superintendent to Police Brigadier General

-Senior Superintendent to Police Colonel

-Supt. to Police Lieutenant Colonel

-Chief Inspector to Police Major

-Senior Inspector to Police Captain

-Police Inspector to Police Lieutenant

-Senior Police Officer (SPO) 4 to Police Executive Master Sergeant

-SPO3 to Police Chief Master Sergeant

-SPO2 to Police Senior Master Sergeant

-SPO1 to Police Master Sergeant

-PO3 to Police Staff Sergeant

-PO2 to Police Corporal

-PO1 to Patrolman/Patrolwoman

Police Col. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesman, welcomed the implementation of the law and said this may improve the productivity and output of police officers in their duty.

It would also be easier for the public to understand police rankings, he added.

“The rank classification will contribute to more performance output and productivity from the police for having high morale as they will be called again the way they were addressed before, in contrast to the present rank classification, which the public still find difficult to follow and understand,” Banac said.
