SIXTEEN persons were injured on Friday after an elevator in a high-rise office building in Makati City dropped 40 floors, police said.

The elevator at the PBCom Building on Ayala Avenue started to malfunction on the 47th floor, stopping abruptly on each level with the doors closing quickly before any of its passengers could step out, said Senior Supt. Rogelio Simon, Makati police chief.

Majority of those injured sustained lumps and bruises from slamming into the elevator walls and into each other as they reached the ground floor and were rushed to the Ospital ng Makati.

The police chief said there were 28 passengers aboard the unmanned service elevator.

“Nagpipipindot sila, pwedeng yun yung cause ng pag-malfunction. Di kasi din dapat ginagamit yun ng walang operator,” he told reporters.

Police are investigating the incident and was considering the possibility that one of the elevator cables may have snapped. NEIL JAYSON N. SERVALLOS
