The chief of staff of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) will meet his Philippine counterpart on Monday, March 4.

Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, Philippine Army spokesman, said General Koji Yamazaki will call on Lt. Gen. Macairog Alberto, the Army chief, this morning.

Zagala said Manila and Tokyo signed a memorandum on defense cooperation and exchanges in January 2015, meant to provide a framework for defense cooperation between the two nations’ defense and military establishments.

The agreement will be part of the discussion between Alberto and Yamazaki.

“It is the basis of the relationship and mutual defense concerns,” Zagala told The Manila Times in a text message.

According to him, the Philippines and Japan established a platform for both armies to develop bilateral engagements that would enhance capabilities, interoperability and promote discussions on topics, including counterterrorism, maritime security, cybersecurity and humanitarian operations.

Yamazaki became the chief of staff of the JGSDF in 2017. He was appointed the commanding general of Tokyo’s Northern Army in 2016.
