Mayor in fertilizer scam suspended

The antigraft court Sandiganbayan has ordered the suspension of an Iloilo town mayor and eight other municipal officials in relation to the 2004 fertilizer scam.
In a resolution on March 6, the Sandiganbayan’s Seventh Division suspended Mayor Alex Centena of Calinog town, Iloilo province, for 90 days.
Centena denied involvement in the scam.
“My role was purely ministerial,” he said.

Centena and his coaccused had entered into a contract with Feshan Philippines Inc. for the purchase of 666 bottles of Bio Nature liquid fertilizer for P1,500 per bottle without public bidding, the Ombudsman said.
The total payment reached P999,000 in two installments.
