Police Gen. Oscar Albayalde, Philippine National Police chief, yesterday awarded medals to members of the Victoria, Northern Samar police station who successfully defended their headquarters from a New People’s Army attack last Thursday.

Police Lt. Eladio Alo, commander of the Victoria Municipal Police Station, and four of his subordinates – Police Chief Master Sergeant Aimee Lutze Cadiente, Police Staff Sergeant Ramil Ramosa, Police Senior Master Sergeant Arturo Gordo Jr., and Police Master Sergeant Arnold Cabacang – received the Medalya ng Kadakilaan (Medal of Heroism) from Albayalde in a simple ceremony in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Thirteen policemen who did not make it to Camp Crame will also receive the Medaya ng Kadakilaan in a separate ceremony in Northern Samar.

They are Police Chief Master Seargeant Marlon Ordonia, Police Senior Master Sergeants Raul Francisco Jr. and Brande Esquilon, Police Corporals Bryan Ed Penaflor, Jaykarl Laurio, Eddie Edwin Diaz, Tracy Silagan, and Jake Salesa, and Poolice Patrolmen Ronnel Goco, Marlon Estropigan, Errol Montopar, Gerald Casyao, and Jhonar Cris Bernadas.

Gordo and Cabacang also received the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (Wounded Personnel Medal) after sustaining injuries during the attack.

A meritorious promotion for all the policemen has been recommended by the Eastern Visayas Police Regional Office to the PNP national headquarters, Albayalde confirmed.

“There will be a deliberation, there is a recommendation coming from the regional headquarters,” he said.

Albayalde reiterated his admiration for the Northern Samar cops after they repulsed an attack from 50 suspected heavily armed NPA rebels. “Ito ay pagpapakita na ang mga pulis natin talagang handa which is a very good example,” Albayalde said.

According to the PNP chief, the trainings of Northern Samar cops in critical situations showed off when they successfully defended their station.

“It’s a good practice una ang kanilang simulation exercise. In case na mayroong gaya niyan na may harassment, alam nila kung saan sila pupunta,” Albayalde noted. (Martin Sadongdong)
