AFTER a nine-hour wait, members of Philippine media got a rude awakening after retired boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. failed to show up in his press conference at the Resorts World Manila on Tuesday.

American boxing publicist Fred Sternburg, Sen. Manny Pacquiao’s direct boxing public relations and manager, said the action of the 41-year-old Mayweather was disrespectful and uncalled for to all Filipinos.

“I think it was very disrespectful of Mr. Mayweather. Doing this in Manny Pacquiao’s country was very wrong and it was rude to his hosts,” Sternburg told The Manila Times in an online interview on Wednesday morning.

Representatives of media outlets waited from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Grand Bar lounge.

Mayweather returned to the hotel at 11 p.m., but decided to skip the press conference after visiting Makati and Pasay City shopping malls.

“He (Mayweather Jr.) could have let everyone know a lot sooner that he wasn’t going to attend. That would have been the proper thing to do, in my opinion,” Sternburg said. “I don’t remember if he was ever a no-show, but I have heard that he has made media wait for him past the time announced.”

The last communication sent by Mayweather’s staff was at 9 p.m. when media was told that the undefeated boxer went to the Mall of Asia to eat.

No apology was offered to the media after Mayweather informed the Resort’s World staff that he was no longer attending or honoring the long-delayed news conference.

“It’s inexcusable. I can’t believe he didn’t issue an apology,” added Sternburg, noting that Mayweather was just probably avoiding Philippine media.

“I wonder if he is embarrassed to face the Manila media because he doesn’t want to admit that it’s too risky to face Manny in a rematch? He was ringside for Manny’s fight against Adrian Broner and I think he was shocked at how great Manny looked.”

Prior to the news conference organized by the Resort’s World Manila, Mayweather agreed to become the newest ambassador of Vicki Belo’s medical clinic. He also got a facial treatment with Belo at the New World Hotel in Makati City.

Mayweather arrived last Sunday morning in Manila before flying to Boracay. He returned to Manila on Tuesday morning.

Resort’s World Manila corporate communication director Joee Guilas issued an apology to the media after announcing past 11 p.m. that Mayweather would no longer come.

Mayweather is set to leave the country this Wednesday.

Pacquiao, who lost to Mayweather via unanimous decision four years ago in the US, arrived that day in Manila from General Santos City but didn’t meet the American boxer.
