THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned of heavy traffic in parts of Metro Manila where road repairs were scheduled starting at 11 p.m. this Friday.

The affected areas, the Department of Public Works and Highways said, are:

* the southbound lane of the C-5 approach of the Ortigas Flyover in front of Tiendesitas for reblocking;

* the 2ndlane from the sidewalk of EDSA New York in Cubao before Monte de Piedad and the truck lane of Katipunan Avenue after C.P. Garcia Avenue before Gonzales Street and after F. Dela Rosa Street in Quezon City for repairs;

* C-5 Road in front of SM Aura in Taguig City and the outer lane of EDSA 50 meters after Magallanes Metro Rail Transit station to KM 29 in Makati City to be closed; and

* truck lane in Quezon City and the Taguig junction of C-5 for repairs for the fifth straight week.

The MMDA advised motorists to use alternate routes until all the affected roads would be fully passable by 5 a.m. on Monday.

MMDA Spokeswoman Celine Pialago said the agency also warned motorists who would violate the 60-kilometer per hour speed limit along EDSA and other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila of a P1,000 fine for every offense.

The fine and speed limit were imposed after authorities found that road accidents in major thoroughfares were attributed largely to over-speeding.

Pialago said the policy, aside from EDSA, would be imposed on circumferential roads such as Recto Avenue, Pres. Quirino Avenue, C.P Garcia Avenue and Southeast Metro Manila Expressway.

Radial roads affected by the policy are Roxas Boulevard, Taft Avenue, South Luzon Expressway, Shaw Boulevard, Ortigas Avenue, Magsaysay/Aurora Boulevard, Quezon/Commonwealth Avenue, A. Bonifacio Avenue, Rizal Avenue and Del Pan/Marcos/McArthur Highway.

Buses and trucks are exempted based on a Metro Manila Council (MMC) resolution.

Pialago said the agency has yet to announce if the implementation would start on April 9, or five days after the resolution has been published in newspapers, based on MMC rules.

“It could be April 9 or not. We will [give updates]. So far there are still no instructions. At least for now, this is for the public’s basis as dictated by technicalities or specifics of the policy,” Pialago told reporters. NEIL JAYSON N. SERVALLOS
