Cardinal Tagle to wash feet of young people, emphasize their role in May polls

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle will wash the feet of young people on Maundy Thursday to emphasize their role in the upcoming May 2019 elections.

“We would like to highlight this year the role of young people for our elections this coming May na ang mga kabataan ay mayroong mahalaga pong papel na gagampanan sa pagboto at kahit po sa pagbabantay ng eleksyon,” Manila Cathedral Vice  Rector Fr. Kali Llamado said in a press conference on Monday.

It will involve 12 young people representing the 12 apostles whose feet Jesus Christ washed during the Last Supper.

Included in the list of young people for the washing of the feet rite are a participant of the 2018 Synod of Bishops on Young People, a volunteer of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and a first-time voter.

“We included a first-time voter in our list for the washing of the feet in order to emphasize how voters, even Christian voters, could even use this tool in changing the country and also in participating well in our country,” Llamado said.

The washing of the feet ritual will take place during the evening mass of the Lord’s Supper on April 18 at 5:00 p.m. at the Manila Cathedral.

The Manila Cathedral also released its schedule of activities during the Holy Week:

  • Chrism Mass on Maundy Thursday at 7:00 a.m. and the evening mass of the Lord’s Supper at 5:00 p.m.
  • Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at 8:30 a.m., Seven Last Words at 12:00 p.m., Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion at 3:00 p.m.
  • Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
  • Easter Sunday masses at 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 6:00 p.m. /gsg
