The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is investigating 40 of its personnel for their alleged involvement in illegal drug transactions inside jail facilities.

BJMP director Jail Chief Superintendent Allan Iral noted some of his men are protecting visitors of inmates who smuggle drugs into jails.

Expressing his disgust over the anomalous practice, Iral said some rogue BJMP men have turned “a blind eye to the illegal activities in prisons.”

He noted they do not properly search visitors because “there is a go-signal from a particular personnel’’.

Describing them as shameless, Iral said the days of the BJMP officers suspected to be drug pushers and users are now numbered as he intends to apply the full force of the law against them.

BJMP spokesman Chief Inspector Xavier Solda said the bureau’s intelligence unit is closely monitoring the activities of the targeted personnel.

Once the pieces of evidence are established, Solda said the BJMP will file administrative cases for its personnel found positive for illegal drug use.

But once they are caught during entrapment operations, Solda explained the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) will file criminal charges against them.

However, Iral said while the BJMP scalawags will be meted with the most severe sanctions possible, his well-performing subordinates will be recognized. (Chito Chavez)
