Thousands of workers staged protests in Metro Manila on Wednesday, Labor Day, to reiterate their demands for a wage increase and an end to contractualization.

Police said about 1,200 people were gathered in Mendiola in Manila near Malacanang, a thousand more along Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City and another thousand in Muntinlupa.

Left-leaning Gabriela and Anakbayan party-lists were seen in the protests.

Those from other parts of Metro Manila are expected to join the rally in Mendiola.

A total of 8,423 police officers were deployed and posted in places of convergence and vital installations.

Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) regional director, said these police officers would ensure the safety of the protesters.

He also reminded all deployed police officers on Wednesday to practice maximum tolerance and protect the protesters against terrorist attacks.

Besides protecting them, Eleazar said police officers would also ensure that other threat groups would not take advantage of the occasion and launch terror attacks. ROY NARRA
