THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised alert level 1 over Mt. Bulusan on Sunday, citing “increased seismic activity.”

The agency said that a total of 16 volcanic earthquakes were recorded by Bulusan’s seismic monitoring network, with slight inflation of the upper slopes evident since April 29, and the increase in seismic activity since May 4.

It said that there was also a notable increase in water temperature of the monitored hot springs while wispy to weak emission of white steam plumes were observed from the southeast vents.

“In view of the above activities, Phivolcs is now raising the Alert Level status of Bulusan Volcano from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1 (abnormal),” the agency said.

Phivolcs said the recording indicated ongoing hydrothermal processes beneath the volcano that may lead to steam-driven eruptions.

Local government units and the general public are urged to avoid entering the 4-kilometer (km) radius Permanent Danger Zone and to observe vigilance in the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southern slopes of the volcano due to possible eruptions, rockfall and landslide.

People living near the area along river or stream channels were warned against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.

Civil aviation authorities are also advised to avoid flying close to the summit “as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.”

Phivolcs said it was still closely monitoring Bulusan’s condition and would advise any new development.

Bulusan is among the most active volcanoes in the country. Its last eruption was in June 2017. GLEE JALEA
