BACOLOD CITY: Police arrested 30 persons and confiscated P139,000 worth of cash used for alleged vote-buying activities in separate towns of Negros Occidental late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Lt. Col. Adrian Acolador said 28 persons—including three minors—were arrested in Moises Padilla where 12 sample ballots with two P500 bills attached to each, and at least 600 loose sample ballots were also seized during a series of raids in the town’s poblacion and neighboring Barangay Odiong.

Authorities also seized a passenger jeepney from the coastal town of Pulupandan where sample ballots printed with the names of candidates in the line-up of incumbent and reelectionist Mayor Magdaleno Peña — who later admitted to hiring residents from his hometown to distribute the paraphernalia — were found.

Meanwhile, Police Capt. Jaynick Bermudez said also arrested early Monday morning in the town of EB Magalona were brothers Jocel and Daniel Etang for alleged possession of 127 brown envelopes containing a sample ballot with P1,000 in cash each, and printed with the names of EB Magalona mayoral bet David Lacson and his party-mates. EUGENE Y.
