POLICE arrested a dismissed police officer who killed the aunt of world-renowned billiard player Efren “Bata” Reyes in a manhunt operation in Olongapo City.

Elias Gamboa, considered one of the most wanted persons in the country, was arrested at West Bajac Bajac at about 11 a.m. on Monday by virtue of a warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 1 of National Capital Judicial Region.

Police acted on an informant’s tip that Gamboa, who is wanted for murder, was on his way to vote in the midterm elections.

Police Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director, presented Gamboa to the press on Wednesday morning.

Gamboa is the suspect behind the murder of Victoria Pangilinan, the aunt of Reyes, on October 5, 2005.

According to investigation, Gamboa and Pangilinan had a “mutual understanding” in which Reyes’ aunt was giving favors to the suspect.

The two, however, allegedly got into an argument, which led to Gamboa stabbing Pangilinan 19 times, causing her death.

Gamboa has been on the run since then, even working as a tricycle driver.

He was also a police officer who went on AWOL (absent without official leave) after committing the murder. He was later dismissed from the service in 2006.

Eleazar said Gamboa should face his charges as a former policeman.

“If he has a case, he should face it so that he could defend himself and not just hide from the authorities. He should explain himself in court,” he said in Filipino.

Gamboa is currently detained at the NCRPO-Regional Special Operating Unit custodial facility pending legal orders from the court of origin. ROY NARRA
