PNP: 41 violent incidents recorded on Election Day

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded 41 violent incidents nationwide on Election Day, spokesperson Col. Bernard Banac said Thursday.
In a press briefing at Camp Crame, Banac said the PNP was still validating if the incidents were actually election-related or typical crimes.
“Hindi naman lahat ng insidente ay maituturing na election-related. Halimbawa ‘yung pagnanakaw, or nagkasuntukan, hindi ibig sabihin agad ay related sa elections,” he said.
(Not all incidents can be considered election-related. For example, a robbery or a brawl may not be linked to the elections.)
“Maaaring ang category ay robbery or homicide incidents (Some can be categorized as simply robbery or homicide),” said Banac.
According to Banac, violent incidents reported on Election Day ranged from shootings, brawls, and explosions.
Meanwhile, another 43 incidents were recorded by the PNP since the start of the election period on January 13 until May 12, a day before the actual polls.
Banac noted that the figure is 60 percent lower than the 106 violent incidents recorded in the same period during the 2016 national and local polls. (Editor: Cenon B. Bibe Jr.)
