Senate sets OK of 8 bills as session resumes

THE Senate resumed session today, Monday, with eight bills lined up for approval on third and final reading, including an amendment to the Labor Code of the Philippines to allow flexible work arrangements.

The Senate and the House of Representatives went on a three-month break for the midterm elections. The 17th Congress adjourns sine die on June 7.

The Senate is expected to pass Senate Bill (SB)1571 allowing compressed workweek; SB 2065 creating the positions for judges-at-large; SB 2168 creating the Davao International Airport Authority; SB 2069 ensuring the continuous transmission of electricity and protection of powerlines; SB 2133 strengthening the functions and powers of the Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan (AFAB); SB 1983 creating the Philippine Space Agency; House Bill (HB) 7785 establishing a framework for the selection of national performing arts companies; HB 8730 requiring state universities and colleges (SUCs) to implement a land use development and infrastructure plan that include the construction of dormitories for students and housing sites for employees; HB 7856 declaring September 8 of every year a special working holiday in the entire country to commemorate the feast of the nativity of the blessed Virgin Mary; and HB 5438 upgrading the sub-district engineering office in Carmona, Cavite into a regular district engineering office.

Senate President Vicente Sotto 3rd said the senators would try to pass three important measures during the last three weeks of the 17th Congress.

These are passage of the amended Human Security Act or Anti Terrorism Act; the amendment to the Public Services Act to improve water and power services, and Medical Scholarship Act.

The proposed SB 1826 or the Security of Tenure Act ending labor contractualization under Committee Report 392 is scheduled for amendment.

Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino 4th is set to sponsor the adoption of Senate Resolution (SR) 882 commending eight outstanding Filipino scientists for being among the honorees of the 2018 edition of “Asian Scientist 100.”

The senator is also scheduled to sponsor SR 923 recognizing and congratulating Dr. Gay Jane Perez for being awarded as the first place winner at the 2018 Asean-US Science Prize for Women.
