THE government will hold accountable those responsible for the collision of the Light Rail Transit 2 (LRT-2) trains that hurt 34 people, Malacañang assured the public on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo said President Rodrigo Duterte was “concerned” about the incident.

“Yes, of course… The President is concerned that’s why he’s waiting for the result of the investigation, the whys and the wherefores of the accident,” Panelo said during a press conference, when asked if Duterte would hold accountable those responsible for the incident.

“The management of that outfit has already apologized to the public and is conducting an investigation on that matter. So we will be waiting for the report. The President will be waiting for a report of the incident,” he added.

At least 30 passengers and four LRT-2 personnel were hurt and rushed to various hospitals after two train coaches collided in the area between Cubao and Anonas stations in Quezon City on Saturday night.

In a joint statement, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) apologized for what they called an “isolated incident.”

LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Berroya ordered the creation of a fact-finding committee to determine the cause of the incident.

Despite the accident, both the DOTr and LRTA also stressed that the rail transport system remained a “safe mode of public transportation.”

“The DOTr and LRTA assure the public that we are taking this incident very seriously, and are exerting all efforts to prevent this kind of incident from happening again,” the statement said.
